Self improvement is the development of oneself, whether physically or mentally, through the acquiring of new knowledge based on one’s own initiative. A lot of people out there today failed to be inspired to self-improve and you might be one of them as well. Here are a couple of reasons why people fail to self-improve and what consequences it might lead to.
One of the main reasons why people fail to be inspired to self-improve is because of their poor and lazy attitude. Some people always assume that there will be others to do the job for them instead of doing the job by themselves. For example, some people would hire maids to cook for them instead of learning how to cook. They do not wish to learn something new as they do not wish to step out of their comfort zone at all.
This unwillingness to step out of their comfort zone is further exacerbated by the fact that many people are getting richer. With increasing wealth, coupled with advanced technology, many people are engaging in a lifestyle we know it as sedentary. As a result, their minds are too adapted to living a relaxed lifestyle. Thus, they do not see the need to self-improve at all as some might rest on their own laurels, thinking that acquiring new knowledge would be a bane to their current lifestyles. For example, many people would just buy their own computer instead of learning how to build their own.
Even in the political aspect, politicians fail to self-improve. Some of them stick to the old policies that their predecessors implemented and do not make amendments to improve on the policies. This is partly due to the fact that they are afraid of committing a mistake that would result in the lost of voters for their political party. This is also another incident of not wanting to step out of their comfort zone.
There are a few consequences of not wanting to acquire new knowledge for oneself. It has been scientifically proven that if we do not engage in self-improvement, there will be an increased risk of getting senile dementia when we grow old. Another health risk that will be incurred is the increase in obesity and other obese-related diseases as people fail to exercise regularly. Another detrimental result will be that our productivity will decrease, leading to unnecessary losses in the economical growth.
Self-improvement is very important as it brings one’s intellectual and physical health to a higher level. This as a whole would benefit the society and future generations to come. Things like learning how to build your own computer, exercise properly, engage in martial arts and learning Photoshop might be a bit troublesome at first, but it will greatly benefit oneself in the long run.
