The Spunky Poppin Fresh Doughboy
The nostalgic little fellow that pops up wearing nothing but a big old chef's hat and a wide old grin is none other then our Pillsbury Doughboy. In the mid seventies when advertising became the threshold of successful TV advertising, this adorable little person had already been working his magic across the plains for the Pillsbury Company. Every homemaker wanted his or her baked goods to taste just like he promised and every child wanted the doughboy toy.
The doughboy sprang up out of a round table meeting to determine the best way to market the Pillsbury refrigerated dough. One of the copywriters popped open a can of the refrigerated dough and immediately envisioned a doughboy popping out. His name was 'Poppin Fresh' and he became one of the longest running advertising campaigns known. Poppin Fresh is now best know as the Pillsbury doughboy, but still thrills us when he comes on to sell us his tasty treats.
The Doughboy debut was in 1965 where he was the lead character for the crescent roll commercial. From all the commercials he stared in, he has as much as 90 percent recognition for the Pillsbury company products.
The Pillsbury Doughboy may have started out as a friendly helper to the family cook, but he became very versatile in his advertising. We have seen this little person perform as a rap artist, opera singer, ballet dancer, rock star and musician playing many different instruments.
The Poppin Fresh Doughboy remains a reminder of many delicious foods he has brought to our memory bank of meals. His positive advertising success continues to excel even today as one of the most popular characters in advertising history.
When the Pillsbury Doughboy came out as a toy, homemakers went wild over his adorable character and wanted him sitting upon their cookbook shelf. History seems to repeat itself. Many of the cooks from yesteryear are once again purchasing Poppin Fresh as a prized collectible. The older the better, but even the newer ones are finding homes on collectors shelves. This little advertising icon will be recognized forever as a nostalgic toy and advertising success.
